finally got to hunt this old school (church) yard and found these old wheaties. I don't usually post the old pennies I find but after I started cleaning them up, I found that one of them was a '43d and is starting to look real good. I am headed back there today because I found out that I was hunting about 75 yds off of the old church site (1881) and am hoping to find some more like this and some old silver. the others were '51, '56 and '45.

I am curious which detector, the VDI and the discrimination settings you were using.

whites m6 rang up as trashy iron zinc bounced between 51 and 74 almost didn't dig it. i don't think it has been in the ground that long but it was at around 2-3 inches deep

Nice find, good luck on your future hunts.

Hey that's cool!! :hello2: What happened to the steel penny, did you scratch when you dug it? :dontknow:

The only one of those I ever dug looked like a rusted iron disc. Wouldn't have even dug the signal except that it was a part of a wheat pocket spill.

Cheers,

Buckles

it was in a large area of pea gravel and rough rocks. old tot lot behind a church near an old slide. i might have hit it but i think it was the rocks rubbing on it

this was my 2nd and the first looked like like yours. i dont think this one was in the ground to long or it would have looked the same way. there was a crud coating on it but it came off with an electiric bath, thats when i noticed it was steel. gonna try some crome polish to see if that will take the rest off.

Good shape for a steel cent. The ones I usually find are rusted out and found with other cents from that era....

the other one that i found looked like a flat piece of rust, i was really amazed at how this one came out of the ground. still has some work to be done on it to get the rest of the coating off of it to see how it really looks. the two shinny spots are where i had the clips attached in the electric bath.

Congrats on the steel penny. I dug one a couple years ago in a coin spill but mine was in much worse shape.

You are fortunate to find a '43 steel cent in that good shape. Congrats to ya.
The only one I ever found was sandwiched between two other wheat cents
in a pocket spill. The edges were toast, but the rest was good shape. HH

only 10-12 of them known to exist. i am wondering if someone tried to coat this with something to make it look like a copper because the crust on the edge keeps chipping off.
