After spending a few days on the road for work, it felt nice to get out for a long day of digging. My buddy Aquachigger and I got together to check on a couple of spots and the day did not disappoint. Was an odd day to say the least as the finds were not everywhere, but they were the less common ones for both of us. The Chig started the day immediately digging a musket barrel, then a few minutes later after only having one sinker in my pouch, out surfaced this nice US Buckle with all three attachment hooks perfectly intact.
Afterwards, I dug a few other scattered homemade sinkers, when Aquchigger then recovered a beautiful complete 4 reale. That began a few scattered other finds including some dropped bullets (enfield, three ringer, spencer) and a early tombac button. Buckles to me are the coolest relic to recover and handle (other than ID tags) as these items were most likely handled more by the solider who lost them then any other find we make. Every morning and every evening, as well as points in between this fella was unhooked and re-hooked by his owner, until the day it was lost. Worn on long marches, in training, and on the firing line it was there every step of the way.
