... heartbreak! I thought lightning might have struck me twice when I dug this coin box at a former campground this weekend. However, unlike the coin purse I found earlier this year that was full of silver, this box was empty. Still, an interesting design and it looks sort of old. Although the box was empty, I managed to find this nice 1914 Barber dime along the dirt road. Also found a few wheat pennies and an old Yale and Towne lock. Thanks for checking out my post. Happy hunting!

Can you imagine opening that and seeing a stack of quarter eagles, half eagles and eagles...

Cool find for sure.

Talk about a heart stopper! Neat find regardless. The Barber is pretty great too!

Great find. Interesting box. Nice dime.

I think that would have killed me:laughing7:! I would have been happy enough with a Mercury or two. Thanks!

The coin box is an interesting find for sure Steve, even though it wasn't full of coins it's still a nice find. :occasion14:
I'm trying to figure out the age of the European coins on the lid, have you done any research to determine when the box dates from?

I think I can see dates from 1916 to 1930 on their face? :icon_scratch:

Hi Dave. Thanks for checking out my post and for giving the box a real close look. Those are interesting old European coins depicted on the box for sure. I did a number of Google searches trying to see if I could find this box and determine its age. However, with no company name or other words on the box, I did not have much to go by and found nothing. Based on when this campsite was active and the age of some of my coin finds, I am guessing 1940s earliest, and maybe 1950s or 1960s based on the condition. Just a guess though. Thanks again. By the way, I liked your latest post with the old Canadian coins and the U.S. Trime. You sure are having a good season. I hope your good luck continues.
Best, Steve

Very nice relic , and what an exciting find . When I first saw this post the picture of the box wasn't loading for my phone - I'm very happy to finally see it !

Thanks for your compliment Steve, I've had a lot of spare time on my hands while looking for a job this year. :laughing7:

Your treasure box certainly looks like something a kid would hold their coin collection in, would've been nice if it had just one old silver in it though.
I'm curious as to what your favorite silver coin would be to find, mine would be either a Capped Bust US Half Dollar, a Canadian Victoria Half Dollar or any coin made into a Love Token.

Best of luck to you,
Dave

Good luck with the job search. It's too bad work gets in the way of detecting... oh well.

Favorite silver? That is tough, as there are so many. For the near impossible, that would be a Mass Pine Tree coin or a French Douzain counterstamped per the 1640 edict for circulation in the French colonies. (How's that for specific?) For the somewhat more realistic, any Capped Bust silver or a nice 18th century Spanish coin, preferably with a portrait (gives the coin personality). Love tokens are great too. At this point, any silver would be a blessing though. Best of luck...hopefully we both score a favorite soon.

We all have dreams about making those types of finds Steve, that's what keeps us going back year after year. For me, a more realistic goal here in Canada is probably finding a Spanish Real. Maybe finding a love token or Spanish silver is more likely to happen in your area. :icon_scratch:

Best of luck to you,
Dave
