This item, which looks just like yours, is listed in the catalog for the upcoming Vero beach Auction. Current high online bid is $60 dollars, with an estimated sale at $100-200. They are calling it a "CIVIL WAR UNION AMERICAN EAGLE BREAST PLATE". Those would have been US soldiers (soon to be Union soldiers) there at the Seminole Wars forts across FL.
Makes sense for one to be sold here in Vero since the first of those forts on the trail to Fort Brooke on the west coast, was Fort Capron, just about 10 miles south.
That is a really great find. Congratulations.
