Dug this up many years ago and always wondered what it is. There are no markings on it. It is made of brass and It's 2 1/2" long X 9/16" diameter. Most of its length has been stamped into a square shape. The prongs on the end, curve in slightly. Probably to help as a guide for whatever it was inserted into. Could this be a drain for an old wooden ice box or something like that?

I think a mortiser without the bit. It’s how a furniture maker would have drilled out a “square peg hole”.

I'm thinking a drive in bushing for a metal shaft?

No cutting tool or punch would be made of brass that I know of. There is no dents or strike marks on the head. I would not rule out it being a bushing.

My first thought was a part from a Victorian parasol or umbrella. :icon_scratch:

I'm still thinking it's a drain port of some sort. I think the pointed prongs would keep the end from getting clogged. The fluid would keep flowing if some large piece of something came in contact with the end of the tube. Could it have come of a small boat?

I dont even own an umbrella. They sure get a lot of credit.
Shim/bushing or drain or what ever this is fun game.
