The sparkle of broken glass in the late afternoon sun that was scattered down the hill and into the little creek is how we found it. It wasn't a particularly old dump. By the look of things, it probably spanned the 1930's to 1960's.
My son, future archaeologist and now expert dump digger, and I had gone to this area to check out an old homesite. As I walked around assessing the situation, he immediately spied a marble, and then another. So, we started scraping the loose dirt and amid the shards of glass all kinds of neat things started to appear.
Buckles, lots and lots of buttons (not pictured), eating utensils, lip stick tubes, a good luck token, an old lock that says Lone Star Gas Co. on the back of it, a rusty 1936 TEXAS CENTENNIAL license plate and yes, MARBLES. The good guys at the Marble forum here ID'd some of them as being from the 40's however we did find three clay marbles.
We have only scratched the surface, so to speak at this old dump.
We will be back!
