they look like drill marks how wide are they ?

Definitely drill holes. Either for using explosives to break off blocks of stone OR using the steel wedges or water soaked wooden wedges to stress crack the blocks off of the parent stone. That's how it was done when no explosives were available. I saw that demonstrated the WildLife channel a couple of years ago.
