Got out to my new spot for a few hours yesterday. The targets are getting fewer so I'm starting to dig all the signals.

This eagle button was a good signal, and when I cleared away the grass I could see it sitting on the top. Great I was thinking, the ground is so hard this will save me the digging effort. So I proceded to pop the button out of the ground by the edge, and that was my mistake. the ground was so hard the shank separated from the button and stayed in the ground. :-\

Now I will remember to dig under and take out a chunk of dirt with surface finds, and remove the dirt from the find.

Also found this spoon like thing with some design or hallmark on the spoon part (if it is a spoon) that I'm trying to ID. Here is a link to the WII post as to avoid reposting pictures.

Man, that seriously sucks! :(
But hey, at least there's a good lesson there for everyone :)

What a heart breaker. I always dig around finds even when in the hole. I tried to remove a button last year that was in the hole and in my haste the top disintegrated right in my hand. I am sure we all have done something that we regretted but learned from it. Congats on the button find.

I was fortunate enough to find my first button yesterday evening. Mine is also WWI .
The back of mine says AMERICAN BUTTON CO. NEWARK,NJ. I researched it and it dates back from 1901-1920.

Congrats on your find ! :tongue3:

Hey Bob, thats unfortunate.. those federal issue buttons are pretty fragile.. ive had 10 or 12 separate this year :-\

Nice find, at least you learned your lesson with a eagle and not a csa lol. Hope ya get some more nice stuff out of there. Nice trowel its the same one I use.

Ouch.

Yeah I try to do the same thing with finds in the hole, dig around the edges and try to get it to pop out in a clump of dirt.

I agree it was a good one to learn on :icon_thumleft:

I like these trowels for digging. Cheap and sturdy. Great for cutting through roots as well.

although with the lack of rain I'm thinking of trading it in for a jackhammer :laughing7: :laughing7:
