Early Coal Pencil/Indian Pottery?

Found these a while back, want to get them identified... The "pencil" confuses me.. Cant find anything online showing indians using unfiorm pencils like this.. but it writes very nice. And the pottery, just wondering if its indian?

I think your pencil may be a graphite core from an old battery and I'm not sure if the pottery is native or early settler made. Keep looking and you might want to move this to the North American Indian Relic forum.
