Early Massachusetts Militia Button + Toasted Large Cent & KG II Copper

Hit the woods today where I found the 1/2 Reale Silver Cob back in early December. Got a bit delayed in the store and got to the site about 4:00. Finally, after about an hour I came up with the Draped Bust Large Cent thats too corroded to read a date. As it's starting to get dark, and I'm leaving the woods, there is a small parcel of land near the road that connects to the main woods by a raised wood platform. Though this small parcel has some swamps and streams, there is enough good ground to hunt. In the past, I've only haphazardly hunted this area on my way to and from the main woods. But today as I'm leaving, I said to myself, if people were dropping coins and things 100 to 200 yards away they had to drop something in this area. So as I headed back to the car, I hunted in a slow and concentrative manner, and in about 5 to 10 minutes came up with a very corroded King George II Copper and then the Massachusetts Militia button, which is in great shape. Needless to say I going back as soon as possible (I think they call for rain tomorrow) and grid this area. If anybody has any info on the button I would appreciate it. I did a quick google search on the net, and the only Massachusetts Militia buttons I came up with, were ones that have Massachusetts written on the front. Also, it appears my button has no back maker's mark. I think this button might be a very early example. Also, this button has a similar indian with a long bow that's on my 1787 Masschusetts Large cent that I dug in July 2007 and posted here on T-Net.

Re: Early Massachusetts Militia Button + Toasted Large Cented & KG II Copper

Nothing wrong with that. My better days tend to be when I dig a button because most coppers come out like that here. But getting those high tones is nice to hear!

Great finds, Bill! I would call that a successful outing for sure! The button is fantastic and the coppers are always nice to find in any condition.

I will give you a call during the week to catch up with you. It has been quite a while since we spoke.
