About a week ago I stopped by a trift store and picked up these earings. They had little baggies with jewely pieces all over the bottom shelf. They open it up for you and you can pan through them all. I found these and noticed they had long treaded post and I've only seen that on gold earrings, but no marks on them I can see and no marks on the post back mounts either. I left my loop in the truck and being they were less then six bucks I purchased them. I got to the truck and looked them over and see only a mark of 4K on only one earring next to the post mount, so I start thinking this could be good. Today I took these to a jeweler. He first grabbed his diamond tester and stuck it to one of the stones and it beeped intantly and said well it's a real diamond. He did it to the other stone and got the same reading. He said he'll go in the back and test the metal. He came back and said the post are indeed 14K white gold, but the main piece is in fact 18K white gold. He then said you made a good score and the diamonds are nice ones with hardly a flaw. Indeed I did score and I was ready to here they were rhodium plate chinese diamond earring fakes. So keep your eyes open on any earrings with long threaded type post. They could be a score. Total weight of the pair is 5.2 grams.

This find is a bit of a fluke, being marked as it is with no 18K or .750. It could have been modified at some point also. When I do look for good jewelry in trift stores, pawn shops, antique shops/malls & flea markets, very much of what I look over is how the piece is constucted, how the stones are set, metal used and is it signed. That helps me determine if I found something good. This piece, just simply slipped through the eyes of the persons who valued it. Plus being a trift store they only look for the tell tail signs of marks such as what gold and silver would have. I paid 50 bucks once at a pawn shop for a Hamilton ladies platinum watch because they said the diamonds are real, but the metal failed the gold test. (how funny)... The mark on the watch was PLAT. I Look for any thing of value that is just slipping through the eyes of those how add the value. Its a hit and miss game. A better then average knowledge of things of value, high frequency hunting, good hunting tools on hand and being ready for new and unkown to you things of value is your greatest assets to find treasure. Its out there everywhere and new treasures to find are added for someone to find each minute of each day. Look always High & Low... don't buy on the impulse you must find something to make the hunt a success. If only crap is found that day, leave the crap for others. I'm reminded of that every time I look at my crap pile. I need to have a yard sale for the crap hunters and get what I can out of it.

Those are beautiful - Great find!!

That's a great one! Makes ya wonder how a place like that stays in business because after all it is a freaking pawn shop. If anybody should know marks & what they mean they should!

I agree! Fortunate for tamrock, though! :) I'd have to make regular trips to such a pawn shop myself. :P
