This "Dovetail" is for sale on eBay. A buddy sent me the link to check out. Something's to me seems off, way off for an Ohio Flintridge Dovetail.
Normally I wouldn't give it much attention, just your typical eBay fake except the seller has 3 COA's with it. Bennet, Jackson, & Dwain Rodgers. These are well respected persons in the artifact authentication field. I tried to post the link but alas my poor computer skills failed me again. It should be easy to find to any inclined to search for it.
I'm just curious what some of your thoughts are as many of you are very experienced on points like this. I'm pretty familiar with Ohio stuff but
no expert by a long shot. What say you?

Looks off , flaking around the edges looks odd however if it was really cheap I would get it just cause I like the colors in it but would not put it with my authentic artifacts

I wouldn't buy any artifact off of EBay.

If Bennett papered it, I'll assume he's seeing something that I am not. It kinda/sorta looks like a heavily reworked Thebes/Ohio Bevel more than a dove to me, but it's odd.

Jim Bennett assigns 'certificate numbers' to each of his COAs.....viewable online.....so Seller ought to be able to tell you the Certificate Number for this piece, and you can type it into Bennett web site and see if the COA is legit, if a COA was actually issued for this piece. My vote is No, but please follow up and tell us how this pans out.

I don’t think it’s an Ohio dovetail. Clearly the form, flaking etc. is not typical. Very easily could be authentic and an odd early to mid archaic type. Interesting either way.

Looks more like a Thebes than a dove. The cross section and flaking are correct for a Thebes. Real Thebes are flat as a pancake more often than not. Total lack of any visible patina makes me wonder. I think I'd pass. Gary

I'm not interested in buying it at all. I too don't think it resembles a Dove as much as something else. The posting has all 3 COA's pictured
with the names of all 3 authenticator's on them. It's listed for $1,200.00. Just wanted you all to see it, thanks.

It looks like a modified thebes variant to me also. Looks thick and something is not setting right with me on it.

interesting, previous owners listed as Hooks and Converse on the Jackson COA

view listing here

the Bennett COA 11A8Z75 verifies on the web site.

This piece had to have 3 COA's......

It's a nice piece. I place no faith on COA's as they are just opinions someone pays for. I'd say a modified thebes or something similar. It's one of those things, if you like an item and want it, get it.

Looks like it was knapped from a slab....sometime yesterday.

It really doesn't look good for a Thebe's either. If it is real it is out of the usual types for the category.

It's relisted now as a Thebe's.

Interesting, from the COAs the Authenticators all typed it as a Thebes. The seller listing as a Dovetail probably just muddied the waters on the piece.

I mentioned it before, but if Bennett papered it, I assume it's not a modern made slab. (Not saying he's infallible, but he's not one of the paper-anything guys.) I've also got a lot of pieces from the Hooks collection that have been pictured many times going back to the 50's, that father/son combo built a world class collection.

There are some authentic, documented and pictured oddball Archaic points out there from old collections. Double Notch Dovetails, Illinois style Thebes made from Flintridge, etc. that would be laughable if they were posted on eBay without context. Some of the ancient Hopewell stuff would also look like modern slab work if listed on eBah because it is so perfect, but again absolutely ancient.
