It sounds like they came closest to finding the treasure in the room at the end of the secret tunnel before it collapse and nearly killed them. The treasure is probubly still down there.

Expositor, Volume XXVIII, Number 87, 15 January 1896 perhaps give the real version of events.
Francisco Avila was born about 1850. He was married to Refugio Castro. Francisco died on 2 August 1885 in Los Angeles County, California and was buried on 4 August 1885 at Old Calvary Cemetery.

As for as I can gather this alleged money 20000 dollars was taken out bank. Perhaps because of 1893 bank panic.
These crises caused hundreds of national banks to suspend operations, constituting major disruptions of the financial system. In the Panic of 1893, roughly 575 banks either failed or temporarily suspended operations (Bradstreet's 1893). Clearinghouses in 73 cities partially suspended cash payments in the Panic of 1907. The primary banking collapse in 1890s America was the severe economic downturn known as the Panic of 1893, which triggered widespread bank runs and failures as J.P. Morgan intervened to stabilize the financial system, leading to significant unemployment and poverty. This panic was a major component of the broader Long Depression, which saw collapsing prices for commodities like cotton and grain.
In light of this powerful event could been the catalyst to bury money.
But here is the problem Francisco Avila died 1885 aged 35. So it was not the banking crisis of 1893 that caused him to allegedly bury treasure. researching deeper there was long establish family that live in Los Angeles before California was part of the united states. The family owned substantial tracts of land west of the center of Los Angeles. How the Avila is connected is not fully clears just yet

The alleged treasure may of been connected much earlier events. Francisco Avila was born about 1850. He was married to Refugio Castro. Francisco died on 2 August 1885. there is possibility he is not connected to the alleged treasure story. And the treasure connected to much earlier events connected Avila family?
I believe the alleged treasure was connected to an earlier Francisco Avila that died in 1832. Francisco Jose Avila. It was his daughter recalled the story of him burying treasure.

Sorry ! Can't tell the Shadows From Cracks at that Angle .
Though it Very well May Be.
It sort of Looks Like it
but the Sheered off Part on the Right and What looks Like sharp Edges from that Angle says No
