I always bring a machete with me when im digging. Its a good deterrent. Last fall I had a vagrant escort me out of the woods with a shotgun he said he owned the state property and he was going to "build" condos.

Lol...my pitchfork and my physical presence (..and my crazy eyes ) is usually good enough...I do pay off the homeless fishermen by me with all the bank sinkers I find, they in return (foolishly ) give me all the bottles and bale seals that wash out. ..

You should always be able to defend yourself especially when your out of the publics view. Deliverance comes to mind...
