Hi all, I have been hunting around a goldmine , Most of the old site is gone but the foundations from the 3 up-grades still exist and one old hand studded iron plate Lancashire Boiler (wood fired)
First plant was installed in 1863 and the second in the late 1880's .The third was during the Great Depression. tailing dumps and some miners huts ruins from the first gold rush in 1851. The gold mine from the pics ran from 1854 till 1939. There's a lot of pics .
An 1894 goldminer's and engine driver's medal and pic of the mine which on is the face of the medal and a few of the Winders and Machinery used .
To give you an idea what you are looking at in the machinery shed . All was designed and built in local foundries.
Pic in 1894
The shed shows twin 20 inch steam cylinders [Harkness] .Centre the 8 foot winding drum with several 1000 feet of one inch steel wire rope to haul cages. One cage went down as another came up. The large clock face to left was the depth indicator .The winding engines were first motion cross coupled high pressure type with a four foot stroke. Twiss Corliss values Stephenson's link motion with reversing gear,Hand controlled brakes . The plant had one 20-drill compressor and a 10-drill compressor .The main compressor was across compound condensing type steam cylinders 15 inches high pressure and 26 inch at low with a 36 inch stroke at tandem. Reidler type inlet and outlet valves vertical condenser . Edward's principle air pump worked the tail rod of the compressor by Bell Cranks .The Engine's were 350 horse power and used 57 ton of fire wood a week. The steam used came from a near by boilers and furnaces.
