Looks to me that it could have been threaded with the notches in the perimeter used to tighten over something. Just a guess.

To me it looks to be a conduit lock nut.

Might be a threaded nut to attach an electric switch. Many such applications in the automotive and electronics world.

It does look like a romex connector nut but the O.P said it is brass not steel. I have dug the same parts before and had other parasol parts in the hole.
