And a craft project. I was digging a trash area, it didn't look like much at first, but as I started just scraping the ground, I found broken glass, then more broken glass, and then some more. The Deus sniffed out a small piece, and I do mean SMALL piece of camp lead from the site, and the first picture is one of the broken bottle I hope to put back together. It's shown laying with some brown glass from a similar bottle. I'm not going to clean it too much. I'll try gorilla glue or such, I hope I have it all. Next to, nearby and underneath it were two INTACT CW bottles and two inks, with a little lip damage. I will post as I can. Also will show the buttons, bullets, coin, etc as I get this mess organized. Here's the broken one and some extra glass: IMG_0763.webp After it stops SNOWING I'll get the bottle set out on the little rail I have outside for a nice group pic.

Can't wait to see them after they are glued together.. Great job... :notworthy:

I have to go to the store and stock up on Coca cola and iced tea for the big blow outside today. Will post the bottles first, then the rest, then the rebuild of the bottle although I kind of think it will be a waste of time. Which is the best glue?

Looks like a great hunt! Can't wait to see the bullets, buttons, and coin!

Looking forward to see the finished project! :occasion14:

It's going to take awhile. What's the chance I keep all the cat fur off the glue?

Now that the cat nap is over, here's the intact bottles. IMG_0765.webp And an 1858 Flying Eagle cent, clear enough to identify two general service coat buttons and a NY button.IMG_0767.webp

And most of the rest. Big glass, charcoal from a Civil War campfire from 12" underground, two underwear buttons and my FIRST tiny black Goodyear 1851 type rubber button, a nondescript iron buckle, camp lead and a big minie. Haven't had the time to look the minie up yet. IMG_0769.webpIMG_0770.webpIMG_0771.webp

Those inks .; at least what I can see in your pictures don’t likely have lip damage. They have sheered lips which was very common in this type ink. Many came from England .

Thanks gaspipe. The bottles were a surprise. You don't know how many times I literally walked on top of them in the past. I think I'll start on the broken green beer bottle tomorrow. May be hopeless if there are pieces missing, although I have heard they make glass filler in colors or which can be colored for a repair.

Thanks Washingtonian. I never even washed it. I snagged my newly acquired Andre's pencils and started on them. I'm sure I can more detail out of it, but am not sure it's worth it. I have only found three flying eagle cents ever, all three 1858's.

Here's some close-ups. IMG_0772.webpIMG_0773.webpIMG_0774.webp The NY button has its shank and a ding.

Nicely cleaned up smokey.
Has either of the inks have open pontils on them?

Pepperj, no, but the taller aqua whatever it is bottle does.

Thanks Pepperj, the broken green beer bottle isn't going to make it, only 5 pieces of glass fit together. The bottom went together well, not enough of the top to get the job done. I did buy an acrylic case and will put it in there and seal it (so some kid doesn't come along at some point in time and hurt themselves. Should be safe and display well like that. Well, off to dig. Sore hip isn't so sore anymore. I may live! (fell in the house, got the foot caught in the PJ's)

Thanks metalev4, I have only found 3 ever.

Awesome finds! That flying eagle looks to be in pretty good shape.
