Last night I went for a quick after-work hunt and got lucky: I found a beautiful 1889 Seated Liberty dime (my first Seated Liberty) and an awesome 1787 Connecticut copper token (the oldest coin I've found!). It was a great hunt - my best so far this year!

The dime is nice, and you're quite lucky on the CT because the vast majority in that condition you'd never be able to label a variety to.... and as long as that reverse is the only use, you have done that.

Nice finds. Really nice seated dime as sell as a 1787 CT Horned Bust Miller 4-L. FYI, the Horned Bust is one of the most common Connecticut coppers, but collectors collect them by die state. The earliest die state would have no horn and as the die progressively broke during use the horn got larger and larger. Your piece appears to be a middle state of the die break. Nice to find a Connecticut that can be identified and is a listed type in the Redbook. Way to go on both pieces!

Thanks! At first, I had no idea what I had found - obviously a late-18th or early-19th century copper, but given the condition I was doubtful if I could get a specific ID. After leafing through the Redbook and doing a lot of comparison, I was able to identify the type, and the die crack was the key to narrowing it down to a specific variety and date.

I don't know much about these early coppers - I was surprised to find it was minted in Connecticut (I'm in PA) - were they used as general currency across state lines?

Beautiful finds.

Seated alone is a rare find out here, a state copper won't ever happen here, just don't have the history for it ! Congrats on the finds =)

Sweet Connecticut. Can't remember seeing that variety posted before. Although, this site has been around a while and has seen a little of everything over the years. Congrats on your contribution. Glad you were able to attribute the variety.
