I'm thinking of opening a store on Etsy to sell just whatever I happen to have around.

On the surface it looks pretty inexpensive, though it does not have anywhere near the traffic as Ebay does. I've been in Etsy a few times just looking around - pretty artsy crafty, and in my lifetime I've accumulated a whole lot of things I no longer need.

I'd appreciate any wisdom/experience anyone on TNet has with them = forewarned is forearmed! I know that Pat Cats sells there.

I've looked around a couple times but I was thoroughly unimpressed. Yes it's pretty artsy crafty, which is completely out of line with what I tend to sell. If you try it keep us posted.

I wish eBay had some real competition though!

I tried ONE time to sell. I've had an account for years and mostly buy. Anyhoo, it was a huge pain. They limit the number of pictures more than Ebay, and they are super fussy ... has to be vintage or you made it. I gave up after a little while. I would be curious if anyone else has sold and had luck. My stepmother sells aprons that she makes, and I have another friend who sells jewelry she makes. I don't know anyone who sells vintage jewelry though, which is what I would do.

My girlfriend sells Baby hats and Baby Booties on Etsy. She has not had much luck though. She sells the Hats for $5 and the Booties for $3

I do. I only sell estate jewelry. You can generally get a higher price on etsy than on ebay, but it requires much more seller development. On ebay you can just list items. If you just do that on etsy it's very difficult to generate a reliable stream of income. You need to join teams, create treasuries and use promoted listings to really generate traffic. It's a quasi - social platform. The more popular your shop is the more traffic that comes your way. Figure a min of 3-4 hours a week apart from listing to do it right.

I also use ruby lane but only for items 500.00 and over.

My wife tried it for her artwork....proved to be a total pain in the butt.... bailed on it after a month or so.
