Etymology, the study of word and phrase origins, not to be confused with Entymology, the study of insects, is a very curious science.

What are some of your favorite words or phrases and where do you think they originated?
I'm sure that the crack team of researchers on this site(me included, during moments of lucidity)
would be glad to provide sources.

Phrases like, "the whole 9 yards," "won by a neck," "Let the cat out of the bag," etc.

Ready? GO!

Best,
Scott

Unlike yourself, I guess I'm not a member of the "crack team."

Meaning that you have no moments of "Lucidity?"

Spart,
Not sure what you mean unless you are talkin' 'bout "Chasin' your own tail." :dontknow:

Yep, I knew that(it's a movie viewer phrase), but,
Who is your post directed to?

Best,

Never you mind... Now I will cut to the quick :laughing7:

Looks like someone let the cat out of the bag.
Cat out of the bag- basically, released a fact that started a "riot"
By a heck- horse racing phrase
9yds- football for first down

How about:That's the way the cookie crumbles.

Here's one of my all time fav's...

"As useless as t*@s on a log". :laughing7:

I think that was HOG. The HOG being the male member of the pig family.
