Ever try MDing around old foundations,,,

where there is no house?I tried it today ,it was on a lot next to friends.I had no info on the age.Very hard to detect because of the weeds .Lots of junk but found some new quarters.

Any one ever have any luck at this.What do you do ,take a lawn mower?I have seen some others in the area also and thinking about asking permission.

Had a friend tell me there are 2 foundations in the woods behind his house that I can detect.I have not seen them.But they must be old because there has not been any kind of road or driveway into these woods that anyone can remember.

Hello Flash; I love old foundations, I prefer a small coil so I can get right up next to them. An old tradition amongst stone masons was to insert a coin in the morter of one of the foundation pillars to insure good luck to the house, and those who would reside there, so detect the stonework also. A lawnmower, swing blade, or hand clippers might be your best friend if it's too grown up. GOOD LUCK!!!

I had a friend who was detecting in an old gold mining town near here. Actually he was in the hills near the town and came across an old foundation. He saw a bit of it still sticking out of the ground, so he swung his detector around it and lo and behold! he found something like 10-12 silver dollars, three or four gold pieces and some other silver coins next to one of the corners. Pretty cool. I was pissed though because he never called me and asked me if I wanted to buy them before he sold them off. Apparently he still has one or two of the gold pieces. Not too sure of this story though since my friend is always finding amazing finds?

sure they can be very worthwhile to hunt but they are more work. Sometimes you have to move junk, use a weed wacker to cut down weeds, clear out lots of iron junk, etc. Depending on age of site, you have potential to find very old coins and possibly a cache.

Do all old sites produce? Nope. May have been hunted before or the people just didn't lose much there cause they didn't have much to lose.

as for 'always finding amazing finds', yeah I hear that! Just keep a bulldozer handy...

I always wonder how much "spare change" was dropped back then. With a quarter being a lot more than it is now, I would think there would be less to find. I can go to the local fairgrounds and find enough recent coin to pay for my gas. Old coins are few and far between for me.

You are doing good ,very good.I didn't think BH,ers were very good either ,,until I bought one.They will pick up coins the deepest if the discrimination is tured all the way down. If there is not too much junk .

Found me a 1833 kiberty large cent while digging around an old foundation today. It's in great shape, except where I scratched it. ops:

Beautiful! The best I've ever done around old foundations is bottlecaps, nails, and bullet shells. Must be a different part of the world.
