Detector(s) used
Minelab Excalibur (Sword Model) Tesoro Cibola (With GB Mod)
I currrently river hunt in a brackish river where the salinity can fluctuate quite a bit. My current detector does alright, but I am thinking the conditions warrant getting something different. I was looking at the Excalibur or the Sovereign GT (I don't go over waist deep). I know these are great for coins and jewelry, but I am wondering how they do on things such as lead miniballs and brass items such as buttons. I find a lot of coins, but I also find a lot of these items too. I was wondering how well these detectors do for the lead and brass.

Also, I do hunt iron items at times and was wondering if they can be set to detect iron. I know the Excalibur is supposed to be especially good at eliminating iron so I was wondering if it could be set to detect iron.

Thanks.

You'll have no problem with all those metals except for maybe iron. My explorer can be set low and ring in good on the iron I want to dig, but I had a friend who's Sovereign nulled a lot, even on the larger pieces. If you can really turn down the discrimination I don't see why it wouldn't hit iron.

Is there much trash metal? (iron) If not, a pulse unit would do great.

Yes there is a lot of iron, especially nails. I had thought about a PI but I would dig tons of junk with one. When looking for iron I am mainly searching for old shell fragments which are larger, so I am sure I can find those with no problem.

The Sovereign sure looks tempting as I am betting it would do great in the wet sand and the shallow water.

Yep, PI would be a nightmare there.

Too bad you can't hipmount an Explorer II because it would be perfect!

You can be assured that eather machine would be great for your needs. With the Excalibur, you wouldn't have to be concerned about your machine getting wet. The Sovereign has an all metal mode, plus the option to use or not use the Iron mask feature.
