Excalibur for beach hunting - 8" or 10"

I'm about to place an order for an Excalibur II for beachhunting on the west coast of Florida. Mostly surf hunting, and no diving.

Should I get the 8" or 10" coil?

The Excalibur with either coil is the same price at Kellyco.

Also, is the Kellyco straight shaft for the Excalibur as good as the one from Florida Straight Shafts or Anderson?

The one at Kellyco is $39. The others are $79.

I don't mind paying more if it is worth it . . .

Any other suggestions for things to get would be appreciated

Thanks!

I second that.

Definitely buy the 10 inch. You can upgrade later to the 15 inch WOT which is the best for beach work.

Thanks for all your replies.

I ordered the Excalibur II with the 10" coil this morning.

Also ordered a Florida Straight Shaft and a RTG 733 scoop.

Can't wait till I can test it all out on the beach!

I have 2 of the Fl Straight Shafts, you will be very happy with them I wear the controls around my neck and I still use the Fl. Straight shaft. It is very well make, well balanced and it gives you an extra reach when working the back side of sandbars.

An update on the Minelab Excalibur II I ordered ten days ago . . .

According to Kellyco, the Minelab Excalibur II is out of stock, and they have no scheduled date for the next shipment.

They also told me that the Excalibur shipment from Minelab which was scheduled to arrive at Kellyco last week didn't arrive, and they had not received a future expected delivery date for the Excalibur II backorders.

Rather than have my order on indefinite wait status, I cancelled my order and am now looking for a source with the Excalibur's in stock.

I did read that last week the Minelab company was acquired by Codan of Australia. http://adelaide.yourguide.com.au/articles/1183693.html?src=topstories

Hope the out-of-stock condition is just a sign of how popular the Excaliburs are, and not something else.

The excal 1000 kellyco has listed on there website having 8 left.

I own 2 excalibur 1000 and it's a great beach detector, Your wanting the new Excalibur 2 and for the extra money there selling for there is not that much difference to justify paying a couple hundred dollars more.

If it was me i would get the excalibur 1000 and then buy a better sand scoop like the 6061, It is made of aluminum and a good beach scoop.

I also wanted the new excalibur when it came out, so when i was in Orlando last week i stopped at Kellyco and looked at the detector first hand, and i asked the people there about the difference and was told there the same unit with a few minor changes.

Also Kellyco sell's a great mesh pouch with zippered compartments for saving what u find and also u can put ur key's in the back zipper area or any thing you don't want anyone to see.

They also sell a nice shoulder harness when attached to your detector makes a big difference after swinging for a few hour's.

There is money to be saved by purchasing the excalibur 1000 instead of the excal 2.

Also the excal 1000 is alot cheaper and the money you save could buy you other goodies.

Re: Excalibur for beach hunting - 8" or 10"

Maybe that's where the confusion is. I used their online order form ten days ago to order an Excalibur with a 10" coil (should be the Excalibur 1000) - but it also shows up on their order form as an Excalibur II.

They called me last week and said they were out of stock, and expected a shipment later on in the week.

I checked again today, and they said their shipment didn't come it, they didn't have any in stock, and didn't know when the next shipment would arrive. They also couldn't recommend an equivalent replacement.

I had already prepaid when I placed my original order 10 days ago.

Since they were up-front today about not knowing when the next shipment might be - whether it would be weeks or months off - I cancelled my order, and was able to find a Excalibur 1000 from another dealer (who only had 3 left, and said there was an unexpected rush on them today).

I placed my order with that dealer, and have already received the UPS shipping tracking number. Should be here by Monday or sooner.

I had ordered another detector from Kellyco last week (an Ace 250), and it arrived 4 days after placing the order, so I have no problems with Kellyco. Just wished their shipment of Excaliburs had come in.

In any case, I've got one detector in hand (the ACE 250) and another on the way, so I should be on the beach detecting within a week.

The Excal 1000 is a great detector you will love it...Also get the harness, IMO the shoulder harness is a must have, and worth its weight in gold.

I use one for my Excal and both my Sov GTs, it takes all the weight off your arm, allows you to let go of the detector in the water/surf and it hangs right by your side. I use them, and I still waist mount or chest mount the controls.

Re: Excalibur for beach hunting - 8" or 10"

Thanks for the reminder about the shoulder harness. I had forgotten about that.

I did a quick search, and then ordered a Swingy Thingy.

You might also consider the water resistent mesh pouch Kellyco sell's.

I purchased this a year ago and it is great at the beach or in the water, It has a couple zippered compartment's and also a velcro hidden compartment.

It slides on a web belt that i also mounted my Excalibur to.

I purchased a web belt in sear's tool department , This is a good black water resistent belt and stronger than the one Kellyco sell's, But you could also buy the one they sell and still be satisfied.

I drilled three hole's into the right side, and purchased three long screws ,six washer's, and three wing nut's.

The excalibur stay's mounted to the belt, And i just unscrew the middle wing nut to replace the battery.

I also purchased the straight rod Kellyco sells to mount the coil, And with the shoulder harness there is no weight when detecting for hour's at a time.
