I just got an Excal ii and it seemed to work when I picked it up, took it to the each and I noticed that is seemed to "sound" when I would swing it at the end of the arc. It didn't seem to find anything in the dry sand so to the water line we go the first or second wave wash over the coil (Salt water beach) and it starts to beep and fuss not on any spot in particular kind of all over, so I move to try land and keep trying and find nothing. It would seem like you could set threshold and volume and a few moves later it was like there was a target but there wasn't.

So into the shower at the beach we go and the long drive home. I had noticed that the where the mount enters the bottom shaft was loose and letting the coil flex or wobble. I was thinking that might be the problem so I stopped and got some epoxy on the way home. Under more controlled conditions of being at home I had planned to try some air test but while I was getting set up I noticed if I moved the cable on the coil I would get a response from the machine. On a closer look at the cable still looked okay, decided to unscrew the little cap at the bottom and found cracked wires.

So my obvious question does this "wear" match the problems I have or should I expect something else too.

Also as I understand it from reading some of OBN's educational post a sovereign coil (10 inch tornado is a sound replacement). I noticed that OBN was on vacation till December (I am jealous) is there anyone that can do this other than Minelab, and has any one gone through this before and could offer insight as to how much I can expect to pay to fix this. This might be a good time to try the interchangeable coil mod I have read about in beta testing? I had planned on getting the pin point mod anyway and warranty doesn't come into play.

Yeah, had my first Excal II have to be totally rewired (almost at the 2 yr old mark). Basically they had used some type of sub-par plastic (from china(?)), and one of the Minelabs guys told me to "keep it outta the sun". Wut?, I laughed hard at that, advised him, this is Florida, you don't keep nothing outta the sun. They rewired whole thing under warranty.

Kellyco is up their around Altamonte Springs. is it? Check the dealer section below, they're certified, works on Minelab, folks.
I thinks it's Dave and Barry works on them, maybe some others.
Good luck, and yeah, water getting in the wires will do that crazy falsing mess.

I think things may be worse if your problem is caused by cracked wires.

Did you take the yellow coil shield off to see if it has sand in it?

Mine acted like yours. There was sand between the yellow cover and the coil. I rinsed it out and problem solved! When I put the cover on I sprayed it with spray rubber to stop sand from getting in again.

FLATENPA, contact Dave or Barry in Kellyco's Minelab repair center, either one of them can help you...

Seen more than a few go like that-

1: The cord is not UV Rated

2: Toss in some Salt Water

3: Store for a while

And if your lucky the whole cord with just fracture and shatter like bits of pasta.

After salt water, wash and then wipe with a damp cloth with some WD40 or other rubber type oil...

The pics you posted appear to show an extreme amount of "twisting" of coil wire. Great care should be used when adjusting coil wires. The best method I have found is to use 100% plastic zip ties. Start with first one 12 inches up from coil just below shaft connection... leave a small comfortable arch to coil with no sign of pull or strain. This problem is common with detectors that get disassembled and reassembled often and coil wire gets twisted... the best cure I have found is... move the wire or coil as minimally as possible. Rinse and dry in shade... use silicone based cleaner for plastics.
To possibly repair this prob you have.... let coil wire DRY for at least 24 hours if not longer...9or let just the coil get hot for over an hour in the sun (coil only) then go to home depot and buy a tube of 5200 caulk. (12.00 but worth every penny)
Straighten your coil wire to its original possition as best as you can. Apply 5200 (use rubber glove) and make sure it is well coated. let dry at least over night if not longer... 3 days would be best.
Oh and take an old screw driver that will fit tight in the 5200 tube ... it will last months and months in cool dark place... and can be even opened when hardened and used with putty knife... I live by the stuff.

ARRC is correct......Buy some aquarium air tubing and cut it in short strips just a hair smaller than circumference of the shaft and put zip ties in them to secure the cable. The tubing keeps you from tightening zip tie too tight and keeps tie from cutting into cable . Make sure you leave enough cable where it connects at coil so there is NO stress on it AT ALL as coil moves.

Call Kellyco and ask to speak to Dave or Barry in their Minelab repair center, they can repair it for you fairly quickly and do a good job on it....

Sorry I forgot to Post the out come..

Called and talked with Barry at Kellyco, (He is awesome) ended up after getting it Diagnosed that the coil was shorted, and had one pod that was toasted, so I got the fixed and by fixed a new coil was installed and then I had the pin Point Mod added and Grey Ghost head phones, if your going to do it do it right and only do it once. Been loving the unit ever since.
