I've been hunting with my Excalibur 800 for 5 years or so but I'm looking on upgrading it. I broke my right wrist last winter and experienced a great deal of fatigue on my recent MD trip. Is the newer straight shaft an improvement worth the money? And does anyone offer replacement knobs that will stay in place?

Go to a chest mount and save your wrist and elbow!

I use a chest mount to secure my controls and use a straight shaft only because of the added length it gives my sweeps. You can easily make your own straight shaft if you want. Search for Treasure Hunter's instructions on making one. As for knobs, you can get alum knobs with set screws at Radio Shack. I believe they are 6 mm. Get the stainless set screws and not the brass. Don't glue the knobs on with Super Glue. Your older 800 is lots better than the ones being sold to us today as Excal II's.

John sells these, and let me tell you if they are anywhere close to the quality of the water hunting pouch I bought from him, they are priceless!!! I am going to buy a set of these as soon as I get my Excal back... two of the knobs on it were starting to slip before I sent it in...

I also forgot to add that I got the headphone cushion/pad from him also... Before I got it, the black plastic would get so hot in the sun (even wearing a hat under it) that i had to dunk the headphones quite often to cool that thing down... Since I put the pad on, dont feel it get hot at all, plus the headphones fit more snug and comfortable...

You can also go to Radio Shack and buy knobs that will work, they cost much less then the $15. I bought them, then I went to Ace Hardware and bought ss hex set screws to secure them.....

So how much were they, with the set screws? And remember, you arent supporting a board members business when you buy from Rat shack....

Cost of knobs at Radio Shack was about $6.00 when I bought them, 6 ss set screws was less then a dollar. Since buying them couple years ago I have found another source where knobs are about .50 cents a piece.

Wow, GOOD knobs, like Johns?
I like his because of the design, the little thing that juts out would make it easier to twist.. When my gloves are wet (artificial leather), they slip when trying to twist the knobs... Great gloves except for that... They breathe really well, so my fingers dont pucker as bad as my other gloves do when they get wet...

Like Silver..i ordered from John. Got the little blue knobs, the headphone cushion and the water pouch. All are great additions and well worth the money. I especially like the pouch. Two plastic zippered compartments, small one for goodies which drains into the bigger one for trash and then out of the mesh backing, keeping your found Gold and goodies safe from prying eyes! ;D

Yes knobs are good and I have the choice of many different styles, like scallaped, round, oblong, square, with all kind of pointer styles. It is a used electronics store........I have been using the knobs for about 18 months now, and I carry spares in my detector tool box that goes with me on every detecting trip........
