I noticed this last year and thought it was just lack of experience and skill, but I am finding the same problem again so. . . . .

I have tried to detect a few times the last couple of weeks but the Explorer goes nutZ!!!!!! Everything but iron reads and sounds like silver. You can look down and see the piece of can slaw or foil laying right on top of the ground but the machine "says" silver. I have adjusted the sens, the gain, the iron mask, and even let the machine auto sens, and nothing seems to make it better.

I missed a silver rosie two nights ago that Baldingboy found. I swung the EX II right over it and got nothing!

This is so darn upsetting.

Anyone have any ideas?

Or a Sovereign GT..............

I get a lot of falses when using conductive sounds, I always hunt using ferrous all metal now. There are still lots of high falses, but they are easy to pick out from the good high tones.
I also have been setting my sens. much lower when it is dry out (not much higher than 20)

Your not the only one brother ???

Did you restart going back into factory settings? There is definitely something wrong.

Yes I have restarted the machine about 20 times. I have pulled the battery out and let it sit for a few hours as well.

It happens no matter what coil I am using. My next step is going to be to take the Sunray out of the equation and see what happens. It seems to only happen when the ground is really dry.... :icon_scratch: >:(

Iron Patch, I've been thinking it may be time to buy the SE Pro!

This is what troubles me. It's true the Explorer loses a little of its punch in dry ground but will still easily see surface hits.

Unfortunately I doubt the probe is causing the problem if the coil is giving some reaction. In fact, it sounds more like a bad coil, have you tried another?

Does the same thing on the 8 inch coil, the stock and the 12 inch. So this is really perplexing to me.

Battery pack or alks?

Either power source provides the same results. This is the machine I sent in last year that they replaced a board and power connecting cable on. Since that time the machine runs between 12 and 14 hours an a set of batteries which is much improved from the 4 hours I was getting when I first started using the machine.

And I have a brand new Alk battery holder because my old one broke.

I once owned the Explorer 1 and 2 plus the Sovereign GT. Of all of them I liked the GT best. I personally think it's the deepest Minelab for coins and similar sized relics.

I didn't own the Ex.2 long enough to really learn it well. But what I found right off was it didn't come up to the GT (in my thinking). So I sold it.

I think I read somewhere where someone compared the Explorers to Windows 95. I sort of chuckle at that but maybe there's more truth in that statement than one might think.

I know lots of people swear by the Explorers but I was totally unimpressed by them.

Just my thoughts for whatever.

Hope things work out for you.

I bought my first Explorer fairly soon after they came out so seen a lot of Sovereign users make the switch. Very few, if any that I knew ever went back. It may be your personal choice but I would guess the over all numbers are very against you.

Well if it's not the coil, not the pack, then I guess you better rule out the probe. Usually the switch would not cause such a drastic problem but I can say it will cause some noise if gone bad. Would be a real pain to have to send the detector in again... I know about that very well. Not anymore though, I told myself about 4 years ago I was done with their repair center, just sell my units as is if I have a problem and move on. (The last was just a housing fix)

I like a VDI machine. AND I LOVE the EX! It is just perplexing to me that it has such issues in dry ground. I am thinking it may be over powered by MY settings. Next hunt I will dial it back a bit and try without the probe and see what happens.

Does anyone know if Sunray will check the probe out???? If so what do you think it would cost???

Note to self - don't buy detector from Iron Patch!

haha. I didn't say I hide the problem when selling it.

If you think dry ground can cause you to miss a target on the surface I'm telling you to forget that one. You would be less likely to over power the settings in dry ground.

I hunted a dusty dirt field a couple of weeks ago, it's just like I said, still hit the targets but just not as hard.

I know but it should be made clear. Last year I bought an Explorer XS off Ebay for my diggin bud. Was listed as... "New in the Box" Got the thing DOA and was obviously used. The sellers story was he was mislead by a friend and did take the unit back but the shipping cost was lost.
