Minelab Explorer SE
First and most helpful is get Andy Sabich's book Exploring the Explorer XS & S as it covers the some of the functions on the SE as well, or get Andy's newer book for the Explorer and E-Trac.

How I setup my SE was that I went into the Accept/Reject Program and I blacked out the entire screen. I had coins from what I had collected/gathered that I wanted to find and I would lay them individually on the ground one at a time. I even had a couple of gold rings and a pull tab. Press the accept button and swing the coil over the coin then save it. When it came to Nickles and Gold rings I would run a poptab under the coil after I had accepted the before mentioned. If the pop tab sounded off I would change the Icon size to reject it. You may have to check your rings and nickle again and see if they sound off. If they don't you will have to make changes again to the icon size or live with the fact that nickle's, gold rings, and pop tabs ring up in the same numerical area. When I did this I was hunting a turn of the century Boy Scout Camp, so I was not to concerned about the pulltabs, but I did want to find the old nickles.

Hopefully this will help you out a bit, but I still got alot out of reading Andy's Explorer book and it was really more informative than the user's manual that Mielab gives with the detector.

Have fun and don't get discourage, as it will take a bit of work. But once you start making some decent finds you will begin to gain more confidence in the SE.

I played with one for a few minutes and it's simply using the same settings and adjusting the numbers for the screen to match the XS. I picked up an SE, set it in about a minute and used it just like my XS with no problems.

I used it today for a few hours setting it up just like my old XS. I had to modify my program slightly however I did manage to find a 1897 Barber dime, 1802 Large cent (very deep) and a 1850 Large cent. I was very impressed with the depth of this machine. I did notice though that most of my signals were just minor blips at first. Then you really need to narrow your sweep until you isolate the exact target sound. It is almost like I am sweeping it to fast however I am sweeping it so slow it is almost funny to watch.
