Explorer SE tone ID's - silver vs. clad

I just ran through an air test of silver vs. non-silver coins of same denomination.
I found no difference in tone or general target ID location in smarfind between
a silver dime/clad dime or silver quarter/clad quarter.
I am using conductive tones.
Am I tone deaf or should there be a significant difference in tone and if so what setting should I be working on?
Variability?

well you won't hear any difference between these coins. You will hear a flutey signal (like playing several notes on a flute) on a coin that is
distinct and different from junk or iron. Try a nail and a paperclip.
Then a coin. If adjusted properly - you will hear a definite difference.

I use EX II and as far as I know the SE is the same in this dept.
try using:
Gain: 6-7
Tone: 5-6
Variability:10

I believe Iron Patch pointed out in another post that air testin and in ground will be different.
If you are running the coins very close to the coil they may read the same.
Quarters and silver quarters usually read the same to me.May be a slightly higher tone to the silver.
Pennies are a good thing to try.Newer ones read good but on the screen they are a little to the left of the upper corner.Wheaties usually read close to the upper right and most of the IH pennies i find read clear to the right side and about half way up.

There should be a distinct difference between silver and non-silver coins, same with zinc, copper and wheat cents, they should all sound different.

IF you change the Threshold tone (not volume level) the overall tones of the machine change, on 1 silver is a mid A note, on 10 it is a high squeak. On 1 you will be able to tell the difference between the coins a little better...

Not sure about the SE, but on the XS, I understand you have to max out the variability in order to hear the difference. I myself have not taken a few minutes to try this. You can't go with the idea that silver coins will always sound better, this may be the case sometimes, but not always. Same with cursor position. I've had dime hits on my XS that I knew without a doubt would be silver if it was a dime, and they were. I refer to the cursor that is almost off the top of the screen where you can't even see the line that cuts the center of the little box. Everytime it does that, it is usually a merc. The rosie seems to leave a little line in there, and the clad ones definately don't go as high, but with that said, I've found silver in all tones and cursor positions. One of my recent silver dimes sort of ID'd like it could be a dime but sounded more like a penny. It was a 1904 Barber worn really smooth.
