I went down into the back of the house woods to photograph the first flowers coming up (snow drops) and saw this large crotal bell in the freshly thawed ground, almost completely on the surface. It looks like someone pried the slot open and put a pebble inside to replace a rusted out ringer ball. Cracked the bell in the process. This is a fairly old house/property, I found an 1856 seated dime (eyeball) in the front yard when they ran a sewer line across the front yard back around 1960 when I was 12 or13. Sadly it has been landscaped around the house before I got my first detector in 1970, and although I have found some silver and other coins in the yard I have found no more 1800s coins.

Geeze, that's a nice bell. There is quite a history on them. I live in central Minnesota and have found 4 of them here, one in Ohio, and one in Israel. Only one of them (Israel) have a marking on the bottom at the loop..... very interesting. To me, finding a crotal bell is quite a thrill. Keep looking in that area, you'll find more goodies.

That's a big rascal too. Nice find.
