It is a martini pitcher. There was a silver cap that went over the spout. Probably the most collectable one of them looks like a rooster and his beak is the pour spout.
 

Hello secondcup,

Looks like a Deco piece to me. What does the interior look like? Has it any Thermos like quality to it? What are it's dimensions?

It looks more like a coffee to me., perhaps of the traveling variety, what with the capped spout...

It takes on the meaning "shaken" "not stirred" when making martinis. There probably is a strainer on the inside at the spout so the ice in the pitcher won't end up in the drink. So it is shaken with ice but not served with the ice in the drink. The cap over the spout is to keep you from covering the room with the drink when you shake it.
