I found this piece at my 1850's schoolhouse permission. I have actually found pieces of this before, although only halves. The schoolhouse was used to repair farm equipment after it was closed in 1959. The yard is littered with tractor parts and other farm implement parts.

This piece is 39 inches long. It is two separate pieces screwed together. In the center, the longer part is the female threads and the shorter the male threads. There are wood inserts on the wings. Looks like rivets on the sides holding the wood in place. Looks to be made of cast steel (magnet sticks). The center threaded together is 1.45 inch. The wings are 1.54 inch.

It has a part number, that may have a John Deere prefix (AT). That's from a friend at work that can usually identify the farm implements I find.

On to the pics...

Thanks for looking...

Windmill pump, wood down rod connection joint (coupling).
I've pulled a few of these...

Also called wood sucker rod.

Rods go from the motor to the pump. So there can be a whole lot of them down hole.

Edit-
It's- PAT 2157713.
The P has corroded away.
