Farm finds & 2 "whats-its"
Had a few hours to kill, so I hit the old farm again before the house falls in. It was windy today, and the house is showing further signs of twisting and coming apart since I was there last. Some things I dug (the two tin pieces), and the other stuff I happen to stumble upon. The old piece of green crockware, door knob, old door lock , and brown bottle, I found in the house.
Any idea on either of the two tin pieces, as to what they are?On the back of the curved tin piece is a piece of leather crimped onto it. No writing on it.
Another neat thing I discovered while in "hidden cache hunting mode", was some pieces of old newspaper in the shed. They were actually put there for some reason when it was built. The reason I know is, they were found placed between the shed framing and the wood siding put on. The nails ran right through the pieces of paper.
Any ideas why that would have been done? Insulation?
The pieces I was able to recover were very brittle. I brought them home to research so I could hopefully put a date with this old farm property. There were only small sections, but I did see the following names:
*News and Observer - That's our current newspaper here in Raleigh that I find out has been around since the Civil War. (Learn something new everyday)
*Josephus Daniels - Born around 1850, and later purchased the News and Observer.
*Senator Overman - Became a NC Senator in 1914.
Well, I now know the house is at least from the early 1900's.
No gold bars or hidden caches today, just a few hours of fun.
