Cru'dad spent 3 hours today on the fav field with little success. Funny what difference a day makes.

A OK 16-17th century complete thimble
fraction of a silver hammered.
bits...

I have a day off tomorrow to help on this field before its ploughed (not sure when?) & then we will hit it again.

Nice finds, really like the thimble. Many guys will say what I'm going to tell you is crazy
but it works. The weather makes all the difference in the world of metal detecting.

I too was a doubter. A good friend of mine, told me that the weather can affect your detecting
finds. I said ya right!

Low and behold I and another detecting partner were out hunting a field, we hadn't found anything to
speak of. It was hotter than heck out, all of a sudden the weather cooled off quickly and a rain storm was
approaching. Bang, we started digging up silver all over the place.

This has happened again and again. Try it, some raining looking day, go out to one of your hunted
out places and see what you can dig up.

Oh what a difference a day can make, or even a hour or so. LOL

Its been looking like its going to rain all day, exactly like yesterday. I'm not saying it doesn't work but on this occassion he was searching the wrong area.

i got a book on advanced detecting from my parents in-law (not that I'm in any way advanced) it was hard going and very technichal.
according to the book the best time is just after a thunder storm and also where mineralisation is concerned, its best after rain when the top couple of inches are dry.

don't know how true it is, I'd love to have the time and money to find out though!

I've spoken to Pro's who say the same.

Why don't dad keep his coins? :icon_scratch: That is interesting!

Kirk

He doesn't keep anything (not just the coins). I detected for 12 years before he started. Even now he has detected for 10 years he still has difficulty IDing stuff. Its my interest but he is good with Roman Coins, & mapping finds for me. He has no interest in the monetary value of these objects (like myself), so why would he worry about giving them up to me, when he knows I will look after them safely? I thought you would understand the passion of hunting :icon_scratch: :D

Any older dads would understand this. There's a point, after which you stop stockpiling for yourself and begin helping your kids stockpile for themselves and your grandkids.

Nice work, Crusader. Any piece of a hammered is a good find (of course, the ones that the plow hasn't gone to work on are the nicest ones). The thimble looks like it has stood the test of time well.

Are any of those three items in the upper right hand corner of your photo Medieval? (Follow-up question: What are they? Strap ends? Book clasps?)

Regards,

Buckleboy

Those are great finds, I'd take those anyday!
The comment on the weather: I was out on Wrightsville Beach one morning just as the sun was coming up. It was a little cool and I wasn't finding anything. As soon as the beach started warming up I was pinging 'em up all over the place. There has to be something to it. And I guess it could go either way- hot to cold or cold to hot.

Left - part of a Georgian shoe buckle
middle - buckle plate of a Georgian shoe buckle
right - Medieval spur strap buckle, missing the end.

If you think that hammered good, wait for what I got today!
