🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Fern Fossil? Kern River, Ca.

I found this one near the Kern River. I’m thinking that the lines are maybe plant or fern fossils. A friend thought they were markings, but the discoloration is in the stone. No signs of tool marks. The pattern reminds me of the marks left behind after peeling creeping vines off of masonry. Otherwise I’ve got nothing. Any ideas? And thanks!

That looks like a fine grained igneous rock. If it is, there’s no way it could have fossils. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.

It is igneous rock. My last diagnonsense is that maybe the marks formed under pressure or due to other geological forces.
