I took the big 15 inch WOT coil on my Sovereign Elite for a test drive this past week in an older well hunted park which was once an old military site and to a well hunted location in a wooded area that was an encampment for Sherman's forces during the March to the Sea through Georgia. AND THE RESULTS WERE!!!!

NADA, ZIP, ZERO

I understand that since these locations were well hunted, I didn't expect to find loads of coins and relics but I did expect to find something. I am an experienced hunter and I understand the capabilities and limitations of coils related to size and configuration. My results were what I expected but you always hope that maybe you can pull rabbits out of hats. If anyone has had success with the 15 inch WOT in parks or relic hunting, please let me know if there is something you have done that got better results or if you agree that the result obtained were the results expected.

Both of the locations were used heavily for years for different purposes and were occupied by people for well over 100 years. I was hoping that I could pull one goody from beyond the depths of conventional coils and all of the oldy but goody coils like the old Hot Head and any other device made by man. I dug many a faint target signal that I had an inkling may have been a deep good target but found that most were ghost targets that disappeared after I dug a hole in search of them. I did occasionally find a very small target, (thus the faint signal), made of copper or brass but nothing really deep or of value. If there were good items beneath the ground, the Elite didn't see them with this coil for me on this day. I had discriminate set to nothing and all other controls on standard settings. I did a second hunt where I changed the settings to discriminate more but again with no results.

I made a disciplined effort of it by not going wild on a disorganized hunt. I systematically searched the hot area of the park, about 1/2 acre, where many finds have come from and where I have found some coins in the past very deep with other machines. My expectations were that I would find a stray coin or artifact deeper than I had before but it did not pan out. Later, I did use my stock 10 inch coil in the same area and picked an old wheat penny from about 8 inches that had not been seen by any of the thousands of detectors that have hit this park before including my previous ones.

When I hit the wooded area of the Sherman Civil War encampment with the WOT coil, I got pretty much the same results with nothing coming out of there either so I changed back over to my stock 10 inch coil and changed locations.

I moved to a nearby area that had been recently clear cut for logging and stepped out of my truck into a sandy spot right onto a group of .58 Caliber William's clean out bullets that had been dropped. I dug four bullets at about 6 to 10 inches just feet from my truck in a matter of a couple of minutes eventually finding 8 bullets total of varied types in an area of about 20 feet in circumference. After I had checked the area several times with my 10 inch coil in various search patterns, I put the WOT coil on for a further check to see if I could pick up anything I may have missed. I found nothing more in the area.

My conclusions on this use of the WOT for the weekend is that I will keep the WOT for beach hunts especially for trips to the treasure coast but beyond that, a large DD coil of that size is not practical for relic hunting unless you are in an area similar to a beach with little trash and even then, unless there has been a natural disaster or construction that has moved soil to a point that it would cover items deeper than usual, the 10 inch coil or maybe a 12 inch concentric coil at most would probably be the ticket. I have not tried the 5 X 10 elliptical Joey Coil which may also be a probability in the future.

My next trip will be loads of fun. I plan on taking my Garrett Infinium LS to the same areas and hitting them with the PI circuitry. It does have an iron check setting which should ID most large iron but not those little nails that I expect to dig a ton of. Talk about a guy who loves to dig!!!!! Always looking for that edge though.

There are a few who use the big WOT in trashy areas but not many ever get the hang of it. I'd say Jeff is probably the best here with the 15-incher.

With my Sovereign GT I tried the 15-inch WOT in a super trashy area and found large iron and copper objects almost to China. Some I had to give up on because I ran out of shovel handle.

I always wanted to try it at a remote beach area but never did.

For coinshooting parks and backyards I prefer the GT stock Tornado coil. I used it at mega bad trash sites and never had any problems.

Chief, I have the Sov GT with the WOT, but have really only used it for beaches and some playgrounds. maybe we can get together sometime and try them together somewhere.

I haven't really done any relic hunting, but many times in the parks I had multiple targets and had to work it from multiple directions to isolate the targets.

I know it is a hot coil as I get tone before I am over the target, mand I have dug some deep targets at the beach. I prefer the beach as the digging is SO MUCH EASIER. ;)
