With the weather being really unseasonable warm and rainy and the rivers being flooded I decided to hit the woods. I started the day off metal detecting at a cellar hole that I have cleaned out in the past. I decided to follow the stone wall that surrounds the property that's when I found a bunch of shards. I usually never have luck in spots like this everything is usually broken. But this spot is different I think I found some old farmers drinking spot because all the bottles were booze. But heck I got my first seam side flask which has been pretty high on my list of bottles I want to find. I also found a small Amber blob top which is a bit of a crier with a cracked lip.could this be a Stoddard piece? it's not like anything I've seen. And last of all I uncovered a very wonky black ale that's pontiled? All and all it was an awesome dig and I'm chomping at the bit to get back there. Thanks in advance for the help and thanks for looking. - Justin

Pretty color, both of them.

Great bottles Justin. Love the Amber flask! That piece could be stoddard but I don't know how you can tell. Here's what I've been told by the old timers about your ale bottle cause I have 2 like it. It is a kick-up bottom. Now, don't get me to saying it is or isn't pontiled but it certainly appears to me it had to be "pushed up" somehow. And my best guess is with a punty rod. Maybe Harry or "e" can elaborate more on this

Thank you bass I'm pretty psyched about the flask. But the squat ale has me curious I see a lot of people calling these Stoddard but I don't know. most of the new england glass I find in my area could be attributed to one of the CT glass houses .The kick up is curious because it doesn't have an evident pontil but how is it kicked up? I would also really like to see your ales like this one.

Wooow, all awesome finds RelicDude! I'm so jealous of each and every one of those pieces haha! It sure as heck looks like one of those stubby Stoddard beers, but I'm with Bass on this one, I'll leave it to the guy who knows what he's talkin' about.

Beautiful glass!!!

all are late 1860s early 1870s . because they would spin the glass gob in the mole before they would blow the full mold ,that's wye you get the little bump on the bottom . the black looks like an improved pontil which came right before the snap case.

Here are 3 of mine, all of which are 3 piece molds. The bottoms of the bottles are shown in order as they are in photo 1. I took 2 shots of bottle 3 so you can see how deep the kick-up is
The lips on bottles 2&3 are not chips. That is just the way the lips were formed. I love them!
Justin, I think your ale may be a little older than my oldest one to the far right

All great finds, Justin! Any of those would make my day. Beautiful colors.

the one looks like a sand pontil.

Thanks I'm pretty psyched about these. But if you ever find your self in Southern new England. Hit me up I'll take you digging.

Nice ales bass I really like the last one it looks very wonky.

Sweet bottles Justin. I'm with Sunrunner in thinking that the ale has a sand pontil.
