Gonna use it to by one measly little quarter. In particular going to use the profits to buy a 1916 SLQ. This may sound strange, but I have been wanting to put together the best SLQ collection I can using money gotten from MDing, picking up pecans, selling scrap metal (copper, aluminum, etc), garage sale money, doing online surveys, etc. Basically money that does NOT come from my paycheck. All except the scarce dates HAVE to be full head (I have 5 right now, 1917 type 1, 1917 type 2, 1927, 1930 & 1930S, all full head). With a mintage of 52,000 the 1916 in full head starts around 16K. I have about 6K worth of silver halves right now, that will buy me one in VG - F condition (at this time with the halves I have and the current price of silver). The more I find, the better one I will be able to buy. I have been getting a little discouraged at the lack of silver finds over the past few months, but with a goal like this it puts it all in a different light, and I have the motivation to pound the pavement again. I have been trying to figure out what to do with the money when I sell them, and I figured I would use it for the key of the series. Sorry to make this so long, but if you have a goal it helps to get you thru the skunk boxes and lean times.

Go for it Wayne.....your right, goals are motivating. That is pretty neat the way you don't use your pocket money. Innovative!

I wish you all the luck.

A man with a plan - remarkable. LOL. Seriously, I hope you succeed in your goal because that would be another layer to the fascinating and rewarding hobby we all enjoy so much. It would be great if you could FIND a SLQ with the requisites you desire. Then you'd have to find something else to do with all that money. Do I see a new treasure mobile in your future? LOL

Good luck and please let us know how things are progressing in your quest for a complete set.

Sounds like a plan, man!
Go for it!

Goals are good!

I applaud your goal wayne, and determination to make it a reality.

Go for it !

............and continued good luck.

I am curious, are you talking about certified coins? If so, are they all the same company? I too am buying coins with the 40% I find. I have been buying gold coins and various certified coins. I am thinking about buying bonds or something else as well, just to diversify. Also, I am worried the coins will get damaged, toned or what ever over time. With the kind of money you are spending on individual coins what are you doing for preservation?

I buy raw coins if the price is right, but I also by certified (slabbed) coins. I ONLY go with coins that are certified by either PCGS or NGC (or ANACS if again the price is right). Anything else I avoid. If I can see the coin in any other slab and can grade it accurately, I will make an offer. If I do get it I will immediately crack it out and have it certified with one of the two previously mentioned companies. There are way too many "garage" third party graders out there who "grade" their own coins (and they are usually 2 - 3 points at least above the actual grade) to try and get more money out of them. A great example is HCGS (Hallmark Coin Grading Service). Most people avoid these coins like the plague, or if they can get them at a decent price will crack them out and have them graded by someone reputable.

I agree PCGS is highly regarded and knows what they are doing. I knew some people over there at Collectors Universe (even met David Hall two times) CU is the same company just another division.

I even interviewed with them a few years ago as a buyer. I was a shoe in for the job but I withdrew my offer when I had a long talk with the current buyer and what she had to put up with. The place is full of eccentric prima donnas. ::) ::) and I am being polite

One example of why I backed out. One of the coin graders called her up on the phone screaming that his office was too hot. She was expected to stop everything and take care of it. She went to his office, walked over to the thermostat and turned on the air conditioning switch. The thermostat was six feet from his desk. >:(

Would not walk 6 feet to change the thermostat. I imagine it took more effort to scream into the phone than it would have to adjust the thermostat. I have heard that there are some prima donnas among graders, apparently they think they are the nearest thing to God that walks on this earth. I have met a few people in this world like that. I just shake my head and pity them for the fool they are.
