A few days back I posted on “ what is it “ what turned out to be a “gudgeon” which was part of the rudder system of a burned confederate gunboat. This afternoon I found a solid shot cannonball which might have gone to the deck gun. Dunno , but I have a lot of digging left. 0779C801-1F46-4609-B0EC-4B585C769988.webp
Just tapped off rust with a ball peen hammer. I don’t think anything else need except a finish. Any recommendations?15ACA66E-811E-41A4-805F-E08886D5BE98.webp

That is awesome! Great work and please keep posting these finds!

Very Cool!!!! Congrats!!!

Interesting! It appears to be out of round? What is the nodule at the palm of your hand?

What machine were you using and what did it hit at if you remember? Really cool find!

The nodule is just a rust blister. I will put it through electrolysis. I have a deus that I use but I was using a AT pro just because I was looking exclusively for big iron. What I was doing was trying too get a solid hit , and then probe to find a solid target. Saves some digging.

Very nice congrats on this! I'd love to find a cannon ball!

Nice find. Sure looks like a cannon ball to me. Congrats and GL out there.

Nice one finding them is a good thrill.

Sounds like a killer spot. Nice work on the cannon ball...If I may ask, how did you attach to the ball with your electrolysis set up? Did you make some kind of clamp or maybe metal screen? I've seen people drill a hole and use a metal screw to make contact... not fond of that tho. Just wondering...

I didn’t use electrolysis. I was. I was going to drill a small hole and insert a self taping screw but I just tapped it with a hammer and the rust cocoon just fell away and it came out pretty solid. Brushed it with a wire brush and buffed it with some wax.
