A few days back I posted on “ what is it “ what turned out to be a “gudgeon” which was part of the rudder system of a burned confederate gunboat. This afternoon I found a solid shot cannonball which might have gone to the deck gun. Dunno , but I have a lot of digging left. 0779C801-1F46-4609-B0EC-4B585C769988.jpeg
Just tapped off rust with a ball peen hammer. I don’t think anything else need except a finish. Any recommendations? 15ACA66E-811E-41A4-805F-E08886D5BE98.png

Interesting! It appears to be out of round? What is the nodule at the palm of your hand?

The nodule is just a rust blister. I will put it through electrolysis. I have a deus that I use but I was using a AT pro just because I was looking exclusively for big iron. What I was doing was trying too get a solid hit , and then probe to find a solid target. Saves some digging.

Sounds like a killer spot. Nice work on the cannon ball...If I may ask, how did you attach to the ball with your electrolysis set up? Did you make some kind of clamp or maybe metal screen? I've seen people drill a hole and use a metal screw to make contact... not fond of that tho. Just wondering...

I didn’t use electrolysis. I was. I was going to drill a small hole and insert a self taping screw but I just tapped it with a hammer and the rust cocoon just fell away and it came out pretty solid. Brushed it with a wire brush and buffed it with some wax.
