It's been 5 months since I started MDing with lots of 1965 quarters and dimes but I findly got a silver1916 w liberty today to start the2014 year off. Hoooray!!! Now what is the best way to clean this dime or is kind of toasted. All I have done is cleaned it with water so far. Also does anybody know what the item is against the cow bell. Maybe something to a gas light? Also found a buckle, one 16ga shell and whats left of 12ga Peters, two 270w, 3030 and what appear to be a spent 40 or 45 round and brass star brass shape object with some iron on it.

Good find. Mint mark is on the lower left on the back. Check for a D or an S. The W is the designers initials.

Great hunt, you may have yourself a real nice find! Check for the D mint mark on the rear of the coin. Good luck. HH

I'm pulling for you man ! ( to see a D mint mark on the reverse ) $$$$$ Show us when you get her cleaned up , looks like you
may have a nice condition coin there.

Gimme a D !!! (In a hot cheerleaders voice lol ;)

Congrats on your first silver! The W is the artists initial, the mint mark is on the back of the coin. HH.

your gonna wait? i dont think you understand you might have a quick 1000 dollars there if its a d. i doubt it but that would be something if its your first silver coin and you get the 1916 d i have probly found 80 mercs in my career and never found that one. goodluck willy

Dude check for that d!!! I had one that was a 1916 about twenty years ago that I didn't check due to being in a hurry and having to go to school. Told dad about it and he flipped out on me for not checking it so he cleaned it up and though very worn on obverse/reverse still could see a d mint mark on the back. Got $300 in dug worn condition. So CHECK It.

The W..would be the designers initials, the mint mark would be on the back, if it has one..

Ok I put it in olive oil to try clean the back of it to see what kind of mark we have it. Going to bed. Thanks for all the buys.

As with most coins clean carefully!

Wow. What a trooper. Waiting overnight to turn the coin over and look for the mint mark. Hopefully you don't have to do your taxes or write a book this week too. :-). Got my fingers crossed for ya when you do check.

This guy has more patience then I would.... pulling for the D guy. We'll all just sit here and wait... good night.

Congrats on your first silver, and one that's almost 100 yrs old at that.
Let's hope it's a "D" mint.

Wow. Great find. All I know is, if I found a 1916 Merc, I wouldn't sleep until I could see the mintmark.
