It's been 5 months since I started MDing with lots of 1965 quarters and dimes but I findly got a silver1916 w liberty today to start the2014 year off. Hoooray!!! Now what is the best way to clean this dime or is kind of toasted. All I have done is cleaned it with water so far. Also does anybody know what the item is against the cow bell. Maybe something to a gas light? Also found a buckle, one 16ga shell and whats left of 12ga Peters, two 270w, 3030 and what appear to be a spent 40 or 45 round and brass star brass shape object with some iron on it.

Calling a 1916 w is almost as funny as me calling my Cob Pendant Chinese. All in the process of learning. Waiting for the D.

several people commented that the 'W' was the designer's initial, but it doesn't look like anyone elaborated.... not to sound like a know-it-all, but it is actually an 'A' over 'W', which are the initials of Adolph Weinman. He also designed the Walking Liberty half dollar. you have a nice full date on that one and if it cleans up good, it should be in really nice shape. Hope it has the Denver mintmark

I would be dropping a load in my pants!!! Any poor condition '16, this potential "d" is valued at 600. This is every MDs dream! Clean that bad boy and keep us posted!!! Congrats on the EPIC find IF it is one...

He's been asleep for a long time... I guess I won't check back. If it's a D it will make banner so no need for the suspense of waiting and checking.

Since you don't care, and you're not in a hurry, I have a 1916 P I can trade you before you look!:icon_thumleft:

I just found this on my last hunt, it was all I could do to get home to check. : (

Hope you have better luck. HH

Ok guys I cleaned up the dime today and it's what I was afraid of. The coin is toasted on both sides. No way to know if it had a d or not. It looks like it was in some chemical or heat. Here's the pics.

Man I was worried that would be the case ( going by the 9-12 o-clock damage on the front of the coin)

So now IMO It's kinda like looking at clouds and seeing diff, shapes, faces etc.
so if one looks HARD enough most folks will see a D mint mark eventually .

Congratz on the Silver.

Davers

oh man, for some reason i thought that was just dirt on the coin...didnt relized it was that toasted

That sucks big time auhhhhh. Try sending it in maybe they can confirm it.

Congrats on the silver Merc hope it has a D! The thing next to the cow bell does look like an old gas lamp part.
