Detector(s) used
Team Tesoro
...got my hands on a Tesoro!

Just picked up a Tesoro Bandido II Umax - looking forward to taking it for a swing this weekend (if the darn weather plays nice). Anyone have any tips or tricks it would be greatly appreciated. Also, will any of the coils made for Umax machines fit/work on this one? I'm looking to pick up the 9x8 and either the 4inch or the 5.75 inch. I became addicted to using my four inch coil in trashy areas on my BH, so I'm hoping to get the same, if not better results on the Tesoro. Thanks and happy hunting... :happy3: :icon_thumright:

Practice ground balancing don't be frustrated by it if you've never had to do it manually before it becomes second nature after a short while. Dig almost everything at first like most detectors it's a quick way to learn it's character. It's a Tesoro learn to trust what it's telling you if you second guess it to much you'll dig a lot of trash targets. Xing to pinpoint works very well but learn the retune switch's function for pinpointing under retuning the threshold heading in the manual and the pinpointing section, in areas with valuable targets it will help you to size them up, and good coin sized targets will always be right in the middle of the donut so you don't whack'em with the shovel. Proper ground balance and supertuning also in the manual which can be found online at Tesoro adds good depth to mine you don't have to make it to chatty right at the edge works well.

Pay attention to the setting of the knobs every once in a while if you bump them around to much you may be detecting at less than optimum setting for a while before you notice them. Starting out in a trashy area could be confusing at first find a spot with a decent ratio of good targets and learn the sweet sounds. If you lose a target as you begin to dig it up or disturb the ground all metal mode will find it. Carry a little copy of the disc level chart in your pocket till you learn the settings you'll be able to guess what coming out of the ground once committed to memory. As a general rule your looking for the coils with the five pin connectors the four pin coils will not work. Raising and sweeping the coil up over the target at different heights will help you determine the depth of the target. If you can see the target from space it may be bigger than you want to deal with or you just found your septic tank.

And if your married tell your wife your cell phone interferes with the detector and has to be left in your car/truck even though it doesn't
then you'll have more time to detect.

Beep, Beep

Thanks for the tips...

Find a spot completely void of any trash or targets when balancing. Check the balance from time to time when hunting, especially if you cover a fair distance from where you intially balanced it. Good hunting, Sqwaby

Thanks Sqwaby - I'll be hunting a pretty tight pattern on Saturday (small area of a field) so hopefully I wont be doing to much re-adjusting.

Brett has given you some invaluable advice. Now you'll know how to get every bit of information that an ID machine has--from an ID of the item's composition, to its size, and even depth. One day you'll be the Jedi Master of the new Tesoro.

Like Greatlakes, I have the same Bandido and a Soveriegn, Learn to ground balance and do it often. Ground changes in a matter of feet. Best of luck.
By the way that is a really good detector and many people in the know would love one.

Thanks Skinner - I have noticed that about the ground balance too. It definitely takes practice but I'm fairing pretty well so far. The hardest thing is getting used to the noises and trying to learn the depth of my targets. Eventually, it'll be like second nature to me and somewhere down the line I'd like to add a few different coils and another machine to my "arsenal"...
