Finally!!!

Finally found a spear point or large arrowhead. We have very little chert here. To me it looks like a heat treated river rock. What do you guys think?

The insitu is not original i put it back the way i found it.


It was inbetween two rocks.

Gotta be honest Jamus..to my eyes it appears to be a natural rock.

I see no markings of it being worked, and the rough side looks as
if it was broken off of a larger rock at some point in time.

I'm no expert, so don't take it as gospel until someone who knows
much more can share their thoughts.

Arrow I appreciate the reply and i know its different. The pictures to me demonstrate that it is a sedimentary rock that was broken off a larger piece.I showed the back because it shows a reddish hue. Which is indicitive of heat treated sandstone which i am very familiar with. I highly doubt that you are going to see the same type of flaking scars on chert then you would with this material. This type of material would be unworkable unless heattreated.The texture is not of a naural break to me the texture shows flaking scars worked bilatterally Also older projectile points are rounded especially the leaf shape ones here in Cali. There is a very nice sharp point and if you open the outside pic you can see a little polish on the tip. The bottom has a what i can see a pretty obvious contracting stem.

To be honest i thought it was pretty obvious it was worked but im always open to being wrong. I asked what do you think refering to arrowhead or spearpoint.

Heres a cropped photo.


Obvious contracting stem. Polish on tip. Unique material to attempt to flake Reddish hue on the backside implies subjected to heat to improve flaking quality. Just like worked slate you can see the layers.Obviously Natives used materials they had available. Also has a sharp point for being just a river rock.

The first 2 pics are basalt i thought they looked wacked a few times. The 3 and 4th pic looks like a chopper not sure of the material or if a chopper.

Maybe one day a detector that gives a high tone for a real artifact and a low for a rock. I'd give a dollar.

Natural rocks, I deal with a lot of that type of rock where I am and in the recent fires it has cracked and split rocks to look very similar to that and I've been fooled a couple times until I looked close
