Where would the bell be located on an old coastal schooner? Such as the ones used in new england around the turn of the century? Did most of these small ships even have a bell? What would it have been made of, Brass ? thanks bell47

usually at the stern near the wheel on most vessels. the bell was used to summon crew and notify other vessels of their presence to avoid collision. if the sails needed trimming or another crews time on watch was due they rang the bell.
