I like finding great things. Roll hunting is a lot of fun. Anybody that starts this hobby should know that if you are serious it is not simple. I have accounts at nearly every bank in my area and keeping up with them and making sure none of them go into dormancy is a challenge in itself. The amount of money and time you spend in this hobby is up to you and up to the banks that you have in your area. My suggestion is when starting off, ease a bank into it. I read of people constantly overwhelming banks (this includes old timers in this hobby) when they start off with this hobby and then all of a suddun the banks see them as a nuisance. DUH. Don't make them notice you too much. I mean make them know you are there and will pick up your orders on a constant basis but don't over do it. Start small and work your way up. Get a good reputation with them. Once this is done everything is cool. If you do have a bank that is still uncooperative... forget them. Move on. This is why I have so many accounts.
This hobby has turned into a second job for me. I'm pretty sure that any of my "colleges" can say the same. Like I said earlier it takes time and money to play in this game. I myself pick up coins 4 to 5 days a week going through around 6 thousand dollars in coins wether that be pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters, halfs, Ikes. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD REPRETATION TO DO THIS AMOUNT. I know others do the same or more but the major key is all the same... tellers welcome them instead of dread when they come. Some things you can do when starting off a new bank is make them cookies, bring them donuts, by them chocolates on or around Christmas or new years. Little things like this go a long way. I know of on guy that gives out five dollar gift certificates to the tellers that save him coins. I'd do this but I am not as wealthy as this guy and don't have the funds that this guy has to spend. I know I said I go through 6 thousand a week in coin and it seems like I'd have the money to do the same but I need that money to make sure I can meet my coin orders throughout the week.
As you get into this hobby you will meet a lot of neat people and find some great things. In this game beginners luck will happen. The people that get the coolest things are the ones that are persistant. You don't get dream boxes everyday otherwise everyone would be doing this hobby. Everything in my collection is found. I have never bought a coin for more than it is worth in face value. I have completed sets of coins and it brings me more satisfaction that I did it by hard work and determination than going out and buying the same coin at a coin shop.
If you are new to this hobby keep your tongue tied or share here on this site. Read the rules of coin roll hunting. You can find it somewhere on this thread. If I have violated any of them, well at least I did it here. I have shared some secrets as to what I feel is the way to do things but you need to find out what works for you. Everybody has a different situation. You will have fun participating in this but it is the most fun if you share it with everyone else because after all we all read this forum to share the experiences that everyone else has while doing this.
Signing off and HH,
Frank

Admire your determination Frank, but that sounds like way too much work. To me a hobby is supposed to be fun. When it becomes like a second job, it's no longer fun to me. Been doing this off and on for several years, and I don't mind sharing info. I'm just not that greedy, and besides, no one I know has the least bit of interest in this hobby. Good luck,

Yes, I said it is like a second job to me but it is the best job I could ever have. There is nothing better than finding something that would have otherwise been overseen. Also I don't mind sharing any info to anyone that is not in my area :dontknow: . But it really doesen't matter, if you want to try this out you can. All I know is I have a great time and I'll never stop as long as I can. Also I don't considder myself to... greedy, I just hope I find more than the next guy.
Have fun and HH,
Frank

For some CRH is a nice hobby. Looking for error coins, filling albums etc. It's an above ground treasure hunt.
Without a doubt CRH can provide enough income if done on a large enough scale to take the place of a second part time job. Surely some do it for this purpose.
As for myself, I'm not a coin collector, but on the rare occasion that I find an old coin, I wonder about it's history, where it has been, and what was going on in the world, what life was like long ago when this coin was minted.
CRH is a treasure hunt. Uncovering treasure buried in a box or roll.
CRH provides an opportunity to beat the system. I'm getting something of value for nearly nothing, and cheating no one, except for the amoral loansharks that you not think twice about cheating you.
Most importantly the hoarding of silver gained through CRH is a hedge against an uncertain economic future.
This is not about greed but investing in PM at little cost and virtually no risk.

You sound like some friends of mine. For me figuring out that i could get extra coins by filling the machine up or by turning on the charm will convince a teller to give me coins she was holding for herself or another is part the fun of the hobby. Keeping track of which banks need minimums or activity may not be fun but it sure beats the other things that occupy my mind. Like my old man wanting to die instead of going to a hospital or my wife going out at night and coming home the next day. Mapping out and going on long bank runs to new areas is another [some would say work] great way to relax.
