Off to a good start this year. I got 11 IHPs already this April, a couple of shield nickels, one large cent and an 1845 half dime. Too bad the half dime was so mangled. It was from the same area where I got the mangled silver 3 cent piece last year. That guy had a bent for punching holes in his coins. It sure didn't keep him from losing them.

My brother Jerry is killing me this year. Last year, I got 11 large cents to his 3. This year, he got 8 large cents in the last two weeks and I only got one. I'm happy for him! He is a dedicated hunter and deserves some good luck.

Gare came up for a visit last week and got to witness my brother find two large cents within a few minutes of each other. I think Gare got to take a reading on the last one with his machine before it was dug. I got a really toasted 1859 IHP the day before and the only thing you could make out on it was the shadow of the Indian Head bonnet and the 5 in the date was the only real clear thing on the whole coin. It was clearly a fatty, so that made it an 1859 for sure. I gave it to Gare to give to E-trac as a place holder in his IHP folder. He will find his own some day! I got another much nicer one a few days later (last coin in the second row). I found the 1860 Abraham Lincoln token a few feet from where my brother got the two large cents. That is a rare piece and worth much more than the large cents, even with the images in the center wiped out. At least the center piece is still in it. It is rare to find one with a metal detector that still has the center piece in it.

My brother got his second 2 cent piece already this year just yesterday. It was in pretty nice shape. He also got an 1882 IHP. I only got the 1893 IHP shown in the first photo yesterday. I have good hopes for today since we still have another half dozen new sites to hit for this week! I got permission from one of the largest land owners in the County last week, and there are lots of old house sites in his fields.

Our mid 1800s finds have gone way, way up since we started hunting farm fields where old houses used to be. Some of the sites can be hard to find and some of them don't have any coins in them, but every now and then we get a site that will turn up ten or more oldies. It's a lot of fun for a couple of retired guys.
