I'd say probably a broken fishing sinker of some sort. I don't know and I could be wrong though.

I fish all the time and was raised up fishing..I'm not convinced this is a "split" shot. I have many pounds of split shot that i have found..this was found at an old home site with civil war history. please I'm not trying to be arrogant but not sure of the split shot

Is there a seam on both sides? If not I would have to go with the fishing sinker idea.

I don't think it is split shot, but there could have been a loop or something at the top that broke off. I don't think it dates back to the civil war because it doesn't have the characteristic white patina of lead that has been in the ground for many years.
