Hi all, been a while since I've posted. While visiting family this last week I was able to hunt an old property from around 1870.
There were targets everywhere . I really had to Wade through the modern trash and old iron but on the last few hours I found a little hot spot.
I ended up with one 1883 Indian Head, an 1883 v nickle, two shield nickles , several wheats and my very first 3 cent coin (1869).
I also dug a small silver coin of some type, still trying to ID it.
Feels good to get back into some older stuff for a bit.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!!

That doesn't look like a trime to me.
The small silver coin Is the mystery coin. Pretty sure it's silver.
The three cent coin is copper and nickle.

There are two different three cent coins. The silver 3 cent coin is 14mm in diameter and came in two purities. 1851-3 is .750 silver and .250 copper. The 1854-73 is .900 silver and .100 copper. These are commonly called trimes. The other 3 cent coin is made of .750 copper and .250 nickel. They are the same diameter as a modern dime at 17.9mm. They are also called trimes by many, but, I like to call them "trickels" just to differentiate the two.

lots of good info! congrats on the Trime, thought I had one a while back but was clearly not so still looking

Good information for sure. I was not familiar with the one I dug at all. Had to do some research after I dug it.

I call them 3 cent nickles. I thought the silver coin was being called a trime. The photos were so dark I didn't see the 3 cent nickel.

Nice!!! Did you get the "unknown" cleaned up for a better pic?

I'm still looking for my first 3 Center.
Congrats on an outstanding hunt.
