Ok, so I went through my first box of dimes today and I came out with one 1960 D dime. I was wondering what peoples averages are for boxes of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and halves. Also, I see lots of people saying you'll find the most silver in halves, but then I see lots of posts where people are getting 4 skunks in a row. I'm a young 15 year old so I was wondering what I should hunt with the $1000 I have. Thanks and have a good day.

MM,

My first choice would be half dollars. That will buy two boxes.

1 dime for one box is a good average. Halves are temperamental; about 1 40% half per box is to be expected.
But check out the link in CardsnCoins last post to see what a dream box could REALLY be.

And a bit of advice? The best silver is old silver. Keep your finds. Spend your paper.

Keep on Rollin'.

My suggestion is to read older post. All your questions will be answered there. As for skunks, I'm up to 36 straight boxes on halves.

My standards are to the following denominations: $25 penny boxes, $100 nickel boxes, $250 dime boxes, $500 quarter boxes and $500 half dollar boxes...

Pennies: 18 wheats per box
Nickels: 1 war nickel per box, 1 buffalo nickel every 3 boxes
Dimes: 1 silver dime every 2 boxes(gave up dimes a while back)
Quarters: did 1 box, skunk
Halves: tough to say, I have had a lot of skunk boxes, and some boxes with 5-6 oz of silver.

Dimes are my favorite. I rarely get skunks and they are easy to dump. I average about 1.5 silvers a box. Of the 4 halve boxes I have got only one was a skunk, with an average of 1 40% per box and .25 90% per box. So I get a 90% every 4 boxes of so. HH. You just gotta slug at it and the silver will come.HH and GL.

See my signature for my averages...

Depends on your area. If you were in Iowa, i'd say do dimes. Halves are pretty dry here. Elsewhere...there is only one way to find out, TRY IT!

I searched my first dime box over the weekend and I scored 2 silver ('64 and a dirty edge '47) and 2 '09's that I just happened to spot. And if you keep searching dimes make sure to check those dirty edge coins.

This is a great investment hobby for a young person to get started in. And what Piledriver said about "And a bit of advice? Keep your finds. Spend your paper." That's great advice that if you follow you will certainly be glad you did.

HH!

nice finds!

my averages:
cents: (dont search much though) about 8-10 wheats per box
nickels: 1 war nickel per box, one buff maybe every 5 boxes or so
dimes: 1 silver rosie every box, one merc every 3-4 boxes
quarters: 1 silver every 3-4 boxes
halves: 1 40%ers every box, one 90% every 4-5 boxes

hope this helps! Keep it up and hh! [R.I.P. Rich Hartford]
