First Box of Dimes

So on a whim while in the bank today, I decided to pick up a box of dimes. They were reluctant. Apparently nobody ever buys boxes of coins from them. It's a credit union. It was a String and Son box. Sadly, it was a skunk for silver. But I did set aside anything 65 to 70 just for the heck of it to see how much older stuff was in the box. Here's the results:

28 - 1965
26 - 1966
36 - 1967
15 - 1968
13 - 1968D
3 - 1969
14 - 1969D
10 - 1970
14 - 1970D

Now if only those were halves. :P Debating whether to keep some of em or just toss em back.

to be honest, those dimes you kept are worthless. you shouldve took the time spent sorting and edge checked the dimes, turned them back in and got another box, then perhaps got some silver!

Well, I was looking for S mint marks. I probably won't get any more boxes from that bank though. I use another of their branches for a dump since they are the only bank in town with a self serve coin machine. And the tellers do set aside anything unusual for me so I don't want to get them upset with me. :P

Box of dimes? Guess I've never bought that many before, but I understand the idea of looking for the silver dimes. How many are in a box?? And you ARE lucky to have a bank that has a deal to roll up those coins. Around my neck of the woods, you have to roll them all yourself! Either that, or buy one of those little machines that will do it for you. I think Harbor Freight has them for like $30??

Wouldn't it be more profitable to do that with quarters? Melt price on a single quarter is a little over $6.00 right now. Just curious.

Quarters are difficult to find in the wild. As the half dollar went out of circulation the quarter took its place as the largest denomination of coin in US change. As that happened, the mint had to make more and more quarters (which happened to be clad) to keep up with demand. See the averages in my signature.

Keep hitting the dimes. In the small amount of quarters searched this year, I've scored both times, hand rolled and box. Quarters still don't pay off like dimes

Are there still Mercs out there in circulation? Found a beautiful 1944 Merc...my first one....the other day while detecting, and I about passed out! Come to think of it, I need to get out more often if THAT makes me giddy!! LOL!!

Yep. I just started last month and in $1,100 of dimes came up with 2, a 1936 and a 1942 that had been turned into jewelry. Both were in MWR.

Keep searching, one box of dimes doesn't prove anything. Forget the 1965-70 not worth keeping.
Search ten boxes and CWR as well and record your finds. With dimes I edge check only, it is fast, I can search a box in 20-25 min. I find a silver dime every $100-$200 searched. My best box ($250) was five silver dimes (1 per $50)

What is CWR??

CWR is Customer Wrapped Rolls, like the one in the picture above.
MWR is Machine Wrapped Rolls. These generally come straight from the coin processors in their wrappers.
